En mis años mozos, allá por los 90, disfrutaba como un enano de cierto género musical, un tanto denostado por la crítica musical de la época. Me refiero al Bakalao, o bacalao, un tipo de música surgido a finales de los 80 y que aguantó el tirón durante los 90.
En aquellos tiempos en los que internet no existía o era anecdótica, las discotecas de última hora ponían música "para drogatas, colocaos" y demás sinónimos que nos dedicaba la gente que, al igual que la crítica, consideraba al bakalao como una música degenerada. Entre ellas y de las que conocí personalmente sin duda destaco a Óxido, en la entrada de Vigo (en la foto):
Los recuerdos que tengo de aquellos años y de aquellas músicas son espléndidos, noches de juerga, cassettes grabadas por camareros-DJ's o los primeros auténticos DJ's... que por entonces el que te ponía el cubata era normalmente el que también te ponía la música.
Junto al Bakalo, estaba también el Makina o máquina, que más o menos eran similares. Los rasgos musicales de ambos se acercaban bastante al techno de la época, aunque mucho más pasado de revoluciones. Tenían melodía y eran bailables eso sí.
Grupos como
Megabeat, KRB, OH2 o Boa Club son grandes referentes en la etapa inicial de este sonido. Más adelante, en la etapa más comercial del género,
Paco pil y
Chimo Bayo fueron también referentes.
Cabe reseñar que dentro del género de la música electrónica, el Bakalao fue algo genuinamente español, de los pocos géneros creados en la península y exportados con más o menos éxito afuera. El origen del término, al parecer proviene de que en Valencia en el año 1985 en la tienda de discos Zic-Zac, punto de encuentro de los mejores Dj's de la noche valenciana para proveerse de la mejor música de importación del momento, el amigo que acompañaba a un DJ exclamaba: "¡Esto es Bakalao de Bilbao!" cada vez que escuchaba un buen tema.
Se llegó incluso a hablar de la ruta del Bakalao, o Ruta Destroy, que englobaba una serie de discotecas del área metropolitana de Valencia, de entre las cuales destacaron salas como
Barraca, Spook Factory, Chocolate, Espiral, NOD, Puzzle y ACTV, durante los Ochenta y la primera mitad de los Noventa.
Hoy en día los géneros sucesores de este estilo son el hardstyle o el hardtrance entre otros. El Bakalao como tal, es historia, salvo en algunos pocos clubs en los que siguen poniendo algunos de los temas de la época.
